Could a 14 year old who is kind of sporty, but doesn’t go to any sport clubs, start a sport now, so that they could participate in the London 2012 olympics?
If so, what sport?
Thanks

Although four years sounds like a long time, but the athletes that take part have been doing their chosen sport since they were very young and have put years of dedicated practise into place. They didn’t toss a coin to chose which sport they wanted to do, they fell in love with that sport, and spent hours and hours each and every day practising for it. I suggest you try different sports to see what you are good at and what you enjoy, but I doubt you’ll be at an Olympic standard by 2012. 2016, you’d definitely have good chance then.

People who compete in the olympics practice for most of their lives, starting when they are very young. The chances that you would make it in to the olympics after four years of training is very very slim. And by the way, diving is a very hard sport. It takes many years of training, and you must start first with one meter, which is not competed in the olympics, then move up to three meter, then 5 meter platform, then seven meters, then ten. Divers who are in the olympics show much promise very early in their lives. If it was so easy as picking a sport and then training, the would be about a million people in the olympics..

Athletes start training when they are about 7/8. it would be very very hard to come into any sport at age 14 even though it sounds young. The olympics arn’t as easy as you may think to get into although many people seem to think that they are for some reason. It takes years of hard work and as you arn’t even interested in a specific sport, leave it. join a club for fun. and for those people who say that Tom Daley has had an easy ride into the olympics, i suggest you try it and you get into the olympics because believe me, you wont. People who think its “easy” put a mockery on the people who have trained their entire lives to get there.

This question needs professional advice, for example swimmers need long legs. Look at all of the sport now on the Olympics, choose some which appeal to you then find the website of each sport. From there you can get professional advice from each association as to your suitability for a particular sport.
Never believe people who say you should not try, I think you are trying already

you have to have alot of talent and basicaly be the top of your counrty go to the olympics isnt a easy thing only 10,000 people do
i would choose one that has no sportyness so you can master its in a couple year like shooting or archery

Seriously – the chances of a 14 year old getting to olympic standard in 4 years are virtually zero.
Any sport or olympic discipline you would have to be excellent at by the age of about 8.

It seems as if Tom Daley, the 14 year old Brit in the current games in Beijing had such and easy way to get into the games.
