Michael Phelps Trying Sprinting Events For 2012 London Olympics?

I heard that Mr. Phelps is going to drop longer distance events and focus more on shorter events. I have no experience in swimming, I was a track runner, but I know this does not make any sense in Track and Field. In track, older athletes go for longer distances as they age since they do not have the speed anymore but can build on endurance. Michael Phelps is going in exactly the opposite direction. Could a knowledgeable swimmer tell me about the reasoning behind moving toward sprinting events as Mr. Phelps gets older?
