Why have the IOC chosen London as the city to host the 2012 Olympics over all the other applicants? Is it just random? or do they have to base it around something specific about the city? Many Thankyous

The IOC chose London because they had a better goal and purpose to the Games than any other candidate City. Paris was going to use a ready built stadium – which is kind of boring as there is no excitement as to how it will look. London said they were going to build a new stadium and down-size it after the games to leave no ‘White elephants’. All of the London venues will either be changed or downscaled after the games creating an unique and new type of legacy. The London games are going to be the ‘greenest’ games promoting a good message on environmental issues due to Biodiversity and Sustainability.

Cities apply to host the Olympics. Then the IOC whittles it down to a handful of suitable candidates and picks the city seven years before the Games. I remember London being chosen ahead of Paris, Madrid, and New York. I thought they would pick Paris. They chose London instead.
The host of the 2016 Games will be announced later this year, probably in July. The finalists are Madrid, Tokyo, Chicago, and Rio de Janeiro. The IOC does not like to stage back to back Games on the same continent, so Madrid is probably out because the 2014 Winter Games are in Russia and the 2012 Games are in London. Rio is also probably out because of the city’s high crime rate, but the fact that it would be the first Olympiad staged in South America makes Rio attractive. That leaves Chicago and Tokyo.
My guess is that the 2016 Olympics will be in Tokyo. The closest thing that Chicago has to a possible Olympic Stadium venue is Soldier Field, which seats only 80,000 people. I don’t think the taxpayers will spring for a new stadium, especially one that would probably be used only for the Olympics, after paying for the United Center, U.S. Cellular Field, and the renovations of Soldier Field of a few years ago.
