I am 15 years old and I am wondering how much of a chance I have, if I start now, to make the 2012 US Gymnastics team for the London olympics, I know that I am a tad old to be starting but I have the desire, do you think it is possible? Is it worth it?

i honestly dont think that you will have the skill level. these people have been training since they were as young as 3 yrs old.
not only that but they train at least 6 hrs each day. most are homeschooled due to that. also it takes a toll on your body. about 95% of them have surgery on something and are constantly injured.
they also have to train their body. they have very restricted diets. and they have to train hard to get those muscles.
i highly doubt you would have a chance. i have been in gymnastics for 7 yrs and am not at that level. and i was in and out of gymnastics for 6 yrs before that. it is a very very very challenging sport. and it takes guts. some of the stuff is extremely crazy. you are expected to fall on your head and butt and everything a billion times. and the falls hurt. and sometimes scare you.
i am not saying that it is impossible. with the right coach (which can cost A LOT of money for a good one) and if you put in the effort then it is possible. but your chance if extremely low.
you will never know until you try. (it also helps if you have some experience… even if you can do just a round off back handspring)
good luck. i hope you can fufill your dream.

I’m so sorry but I think your time has passed. The elite gymnast have been training since they were 3 to qualify for most gymnastic competition let alone qualify for the Olympics. I know watching the trials look exciting and inspire us to start in such sports, but 15 is a little late in life to get inspired for the Olympics. Have you ever taken gymnastic, cheer leading, or dance? If not your body is most likely not flexible or trained for such a monumental ambition. Regardless I’m sure you could look into a basic gym class for fun. I’m so sorry.

You will be competing against people who have been training since the age of 5, all of whom having the same lifelong goal of making it to the Olympics. It’s going to take much more than the desire, because that’s a given. But hey, if you want to go for it then have at it. Just don’t be disappointed when you find out how imrpobable the odds are for most elite gymnasts, let alone people who are just starting out now at age 15.
