Yes, I also think Seoul 1988 was the best. The first time in 12 years the sport had everyone back competing.
Some very excellent races and big surprises like Anthony Nesty of Surinam striking gold in swimming.
Of course the Ben Johnson affair dominated the sideshow, but it was a very good Games overall.
Sydney 2000 was just a spontaneous joy. How could I forget Maria Mutola’s fabulous run in the 800m, Maurice Greene’s win in the 100m, Cathy Freeman in the 400m and of course the dynamic rivalry in the pool between Australia and the US.
And even Athens 2006 was very good. A lot of remarkable wins for countries like Japan, China, Zimbabwe and South Africa in swimming. An amazing turnaround in fortunes for Hicham El Gouerraj and the British woman, who sprang the double in the 800m and 1500m.
And to cap if off, a dramatic final event in the marathon.
It’s too far to think of London 2012. The focus is clearly on Beijing and whether the hosts can overcome the American juggernaut in the medals tally.
