How Does Allowing Mcdonalds To Be Only Branded Restaurant At Britain’s Olympic Venues Help British Business?

I’m really annoyed by this – surely it should be a time to promote British business? I thought that was the point of bringing the Olympics to a country and we’re just flogging the rights to the highest bidder?http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/aug/09…

I think that is absolutely disgusting. What a fantastic opportunity to promote UK business’s. It seems obvious the rights have been flogged to the highest bidder and not to the most worthiest of UK companies. And to add salt to the wound – bloody MCDONALDS!!

As much as I hate McD and can’t see how it is referred to as a restaurant, I’d guess ‘fast food outlet’ would be the best they could hope for. Saying that, McD is a franchised business, therefore the franchisee can gain, as can workers and investors, (the vast majority who will be British)…and as it’s a Worldwide brand it’s instantly recognisable for the 100’000′s of 1000′s of tourists lucky enough to get tickets.
In addition, the venues can still have their own food outlets that one can visit, and which will serve better food if the last OG is anything to go by, but no other known ‘brands’ will be allowed. They, (McD) also pay a massive sponsorship to the organisers and Olympics therefore helping to offset at least some of the costs, and even though many see it as a bad thing, we’re still a long way short of the Atlanta, (sorry, Coca Cola) Games of 1996.

I’m surprised the government haven’t suspended the ban on advertising tobacco products for the olympics. Imagine how much money would be generated if Marlborough and Camel paid to have their logos everywhere.
So much for tackling obesity in this country where junk food corporations get to hold license to sell thier cr@p at athletic events. A great example of money over morals.

I guess I don’t understand why you are annoyed with a business that employs people……………besides, even though the food is ‘American’….they have to hire British people to serve the customers and British people to transport the food from however it arrives (in England) to it’s final destination (the Olympic site).
Or, perhaps McDonald’s won a contract from the Olympic Committee…

Not only should they be promoting british fayre but it should also be healthy too, it is after all an event for probably the most physically fit people in the world. We may see the like of whats his name Bolt going home to Jamaica with a fat gut after two weeks in the UK. Shame on us.

You will find that you will not be able to bring another food into the Olympic village or venues, not even your own sarnies. You will have to eat surreptiously. A tip is to salvage empty McDonald boxes and wrappers now and wrap your sarnies in them on the day.

McDonalds will be paying a small fortune for the privilege of being the only one advertised.
    Unfortunately that’s how it works.
Industrious businesses will find their own ways to capitalise on the presence of the games.

    McDonald’s restaurant = oxymoron.
McDonald’s junk food outlet = grammatically correct.
    Edit.
A fine example of healthy eating for our budding athletes!

Corporate sponsorship, it happens all the time. I fail to see what the fuss is over. If they didn’t take the sponsorship and made tax payers cover the full cost that would be wrong too. People will never be happy.

I agree but can’t think of a big uk chainstore that was started here???
    I’m curious now.
Personally I think small businesses should get a chance!
Nots macdonalds which serves up rubbish! Setting a fine example to everyone ;/

    ah, another misconception
    restaurants sell food
mc d sell a lifestyle package containing over priced ersatz food items
eat the polystyrene box, it probably contains the same nutritional values, and will almost certainly taste better

When you’re as skint as the Olympic Authorities you’ll cave in to whoever offers the most dosh.Right and wrong don’t even come in to it,for shame.

Well, we have a McGovernment, so what do you expect? What a wonderful way to support sport and Britain.
The Big Mac: food of Olympic Champions…. and lardy plebs.

It does not help at all, they just happened to be the highest bidder for sole rights to sell their wares.
