Granted, home field advantage is important in every sport. But China’s performance in Beijing 2008 is nothing short of amazing. How much of that will carry over to London? Will it remain “the strongest sports nation on earth?” Will anybody overtake them? How well will the US do?

I doubt. Not that I don’t support my home team, I just think it’s more important to improve the average sports activities at home than winning some medals. I suspect most of the Chinese sports authorities feel the same way.
For the 2008 Olympics, the government moblized enough resources in 10 years to have its goals met, I doubt it had set any similar goal for 2012.

China exceeded its normal medal haul because of the home field advantage.
The home country always wins more at home than at any other time.
As to the title “the strongest sports nation on earth” that is a little stretch, there are many sports that they do not excel at and they did not win the over all medal count.
I imagine they will win many, but not as many medals in the future Olympics.
The U.S. will do as it normally does, they do well, but because of internal bickering will continue to under perform in many sports.

    no probs not.
china swimmers are rubbish, however suddenly when they got the olympic games all these really good swimmers came out of nowhere :O
wait and see in 2012 if these so called “good” swimmers come back!!
the US may, or may not do well, however i think they probs will do…the UK likewise
