We have a Queen bed frame with wood sides and headboard and footboard and want to change to a Cal King mattress which is 12 inches wider (6 inches each side)and the same length as the Queen. Has anyone successfully converted a setup like this to use a Cal King mattress?

It is according to which type of bedframe you have. I have a bedframe that converts from full all the way up. It is the first one that I have had like that. Most of the time they only fit one size.
I actually have the same type of bed and we had considered doing the same thing. You can bring pictures and dimensions for you new California king and bring them to home depot. Not only will the be able to help you to figure it out. . . . but the can probably cut the wood for you right there if you have the measurements with you! Then the will be able to tell you what hardware you will need and explain to you how to put it together. Good luck with it!
