Unlike Princess Diana, Kate Middleton hasn't been faced with one very personal question: Are you a virgin? Because no one cares.

Prince William and his fiancée have been living together, on and off, throughout their eight-year romance, and Brits have barely batted an eyelash. At the time of Prince Charles and Diana's wedding, the 19-year-old's uncle publicly confirmed that she was a "bona fide" virgin, and it was assumed her sexual history was nonexistent. Although this was not a requirement of a future princess, it was definitely a huge plus.

"There is no rule that the royal bride has to be a virgin, and there never has been," said Noel Cox, a law professor and royal scholar at Aberystwyth University in Wales told the AP. "Obviously it would present difficulties if the heir chose someone who was notoriously promiscuous -- that would be unpopular -- but they could do that if they wanted to."

It's believed that Camilla Shand, who Prince Charles was dating at the time of his engagement and who would become his second wife, was deemed an unsuitable choice because of her dating record.

At 29, Middleton, whose ex-boyfriends are invited to the wedding, has the blessing of Buckingham Palace, reflecting modern times and the royal family's changing social views. Even her strut down the runway in a see-through dress and lingerie didn't derail her walk down the aisle.

Given Prince Charles and Diana's tumultuous marriage and divorce, the young couple's stable relationship is definitely something to celebrate. "After two decades of scandal, I think it's the royal family recognizing that to be normal is to their advantage," said Deborah Cohen, a historian at Northwestern University in Chicago who specializes in modern Britain.
