am not too sure how to word this question lol. . . but the ‘titles’ or royalty change after They get married. can someone please explain to me how does this system works?? for example. . . after Prince William & Kate Middleton’s marriage, i NOTICED they’re being Referred to as Duke and Duchess of Cambridge respectively. Also, why Do They refer to Kate as Princess William of Wales? Is not she just supposed to be Referred to princess catherine? how come it was diana princess diana Referred to ashes, and not Charles Princess of Wales? Also, Camilla Parker-Bowles is called The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Charles since Marrying. Technically she’s a princess? how does this system work for second marriages? sorry if this question sounds naive, but it really confuses me! it’d be appreciated if you’re Able to explain how this whole system works! :)

  1. Looney Dufus says:

Duke of Cambridge is a title Given to him by the Queen When he got married. Kate is not Referred to as Princess William of Wales. She is not, and never willbe, princess or anything Because she has no royal blood in her linage.

  2. Charlie says:

“Looney Dufus” is mistaken. The rules for British royalty and titles just confuse the British. Far as I can tell, many British titles are just words. . . . They confer honor and respect on the person, but not actual power. Looks like you have to be born a prince or princess to have That title, but to be a duke or duchess, the Queen bestows the title on you. I do not understand why Diana was called a Princess. Each of the sites below gives a tiny bit of insight. I doubt if an American can ever actually understand the purpose in all thesis titles. . We just do not think That Way. Hope someone can give us better insight Both.

Lady Diana Spencer (the daughter of an Earl) was a member of the aristocracy before she married Prince Charles, and, therefore, was Referred to as Princess Diana after her marriage. Catherine Middleton was not a member of the aristocracy before Marrying Prince William. As such, she is not Entitled to be known as Princess Catherine. Referred to as if she’s Princess Will she take the name or her husband and be Princess William. Will not she be Referred to as Princess William of Wales Because William is not the Prince of Wales – that title Belongs to Prince Charles. William and Catherine Will Probably use the title Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – just as Prince Andrew and Sarah overused Their title of Duke and Duchess of York, Prince Edward and Sophie, and use the All which was conferred upon particular Wessex em When They married. Camilla (Parker-Bowles no longer) is the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Charles Because is the Duke of Cornwall. Camilla, however, is Not Entitled to use the honorific Princess Camilla. As The wife of Prince Charles she is, Technically, Princess Charles. In a nutshell – if a female member of the nobility Marries a male in the royal family, then the title precedes the Christian name. If a commoner Marries Into the royal family, then the title is followed by the male spouse or That. To muddy the waters even Further, if a male commoner Marries a royal female, the male does not Assume the title of Prince. He May Be Given a title – as was the case with Princess Margaret’s husband Anthony Armstrong-Jones, who Became Lord Snowden, but he was not Prince Anthony. Princess Anne’s children, Zara and Peter Phillips, Princess and Prince Are Not Because Their father was not royal. AAAAAAaaaaaahhhhhgggghhhh! Some kind of confusing, is not it?

Titles are complicated. William was made Duke of Cambridge yesterday morning before the wedding (and a couple of other titles), if he hadn’t leg, then Catherine would have become Princess William of Wales When She married him, taking him from her title and style, however , as he had become a Royal Duke then she Became the Duchess of Cambridge INSTEAD. She is not “Princess Catherine” because she is not or noble blood herself, and to Clarify another example, Williams’ mum was NEVER Officially called “Princess Diana” – while she was married she was “Her Royal Highness, the Princess of Wales” , and after the divorce she was “Diana, Princess of Wales”. The order of these things is significant. To expand on thin lizzys reply, Zara and Peter Phillips have no titles specifically Because Their mother refused an offer of titles from the Queen When They Were born – she wanted to make em Their Own Way In The World. Their father being a commoner had nothing to do with it.

  6. RR says:

She is the Duchess of Cambridge Because The Queen gift her the title on her marriage to William. She is not called Princess William of Wales. She would only be a princess if the Queen bestowed the title on her.

  7. amber delong says:

Prince William is a prince Because he’s a male-only line-grand child of the queen – it’s just a courtesy title, unlike His father who is Charles, Prince of Wales, where the title is connected to land. That’s why William and Prince Harry are William / Harry of Wales, just like Prince Andrew Princess Beatrice daughters are / euginie of York – They take Their dads highest landed Their title as surname, so to speak. Technically Kate Could go by Princess William of Wales, but they’ll Probably go by Prince William, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge or Cambridge. Decides to make if Charles William prince of wales When He Becomes king, then he’ll be William, Prince of Wales and She Will Be Catherine, Princess of Wales. It does not have anything to do with her being a commoner. Camilla is not called Princess of Wales, and She Will Also never be titled quen. That was Decided By The Charles & Camilla queen When & why married Camilla goes with Charles 2d highest title and is Referred to as Duchess of Cornwall for now.

Royal titles and styles style ofHRH The Duke of Cambridge Reference style His Royal Highness Spoken style Your Royal Highness Alternative style Sir June 21, 1982? 29 April 2011: His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales 29 April 2011? present: His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge The Prince’s style and title in full is His Royal Highness Prince William Arthur Philip Louis, Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, Baron Carrickfergus, Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. As a British prince, William does not use a surname for everyday Purposes. For formal and ceremonial Purposes, the Children of Princess of Wales, like the children of Royal Dukes, use the title of Prince or Princess before Their father’s Christian name and Their territorial designation after it. So Prince William was “Prince William of Wales”. Such area-based surnames are discarded by women and by When They marry men if They Are Given a peerage of Their Own, [72] Such As When Prince William was Given His dukedom. For the male-line grandchildren of Elizabeth II, however, there is some uncertainty about the proper Currently form or to use family surname, or whether there is even a surname. The Queen HAS stipulated all her male-line descendants who do not bear the titular dignity of Prince Mountbatten-Windsor Shall use as Their family surname (although the letters patent exists stipulating in particular Windsor, but with The Same caveat). [73] According To Their flight suits as seen in television interviews (before Prince William’s creation as Duke of Cambridge), Princes William and Harry use Wales as Their surname for Military Purposes. On the morning of His wedding, Buckingham Palace, the Queen created Announced That William Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, Baron Carrickfergus. [4] When His father accedes to the throne, William Will Immediately Obtain the titles of Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay, and it was expected he would be That Invested as Prince of Wales, although the Latter is not automatic. If Prince William succeeds to the throne and uses His first given name as His regnal name, he would be known as William V. William succeeded Lord Attenborough in 2010 as the fifth president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. [74] The Peerage is a legal system or largely hereditary titles in the United Kingdom, All which constitute the ranks of British nobility and is part of the British honors system. The term is overused Both refer collectively to the entire body or to noble titles (or a subdivision thereof), and Individually to refer to a specific title (and an initial capital HAS GeneRally in the former case and not the Latter). The holder of a peerage has been termed a peer. The Sovereign is Considered the Fount of honor, and as “the fountain and source of all dignities can not hold a dignity from himself” [1] can not hold a peerage (although the British Sovereign uses the style “Duke of Lancaster”). Camilla is the Princess of Wales but out of respect she uses the Duchess Diana. Diana’s official title included Charles fullname formerly as well. Duke and Duchess are the highest honors the queen That Could give to William and Catherine.

The Queen named him Duke of Cambridge before His wedding and therefore Became Catherine Duchess of Cambridge. His Title and Style IN FULL was His Royal Highness Prince William Arthur Philip Louis, Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, Baron Carrickfergus, Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. He is the son of Charles the Prince of Wales official. . . His other titles he received before he was Prince William of Wales rather than William Prince of Wales. RR you are wrong. . . Catherine’s full title is Her Royal Highness Princess William Arthur Philip Louis, Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, Baroness Carrickfergus. She was not an aristocrat and hero no title or her own, she takes Williams titles. When Diana married Charles, to Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales after the divorce she was Diana, Princess of Wales, she no longer working Could Her Royal Highness Because she was no longer married to His Royal Highness. She was NEVER Officially titled “Princess Diana” That’s the way the public and media Referred to her before and after her death.

All titles are a gift from the Queen and it was up to the monarch to choose which one to bestow on her grandson and his new wife. The entire process is rather confusing.
