Folk meets Classical in this exciting collaborative evening with the young Derbyshire folk singer and fiddler Bella Hardy. Though only 25, Bella has already been nominated for three BBC Radio 2 folk awards.  This eclectic evening will showcase the works written for Bella as part of Manchester Camerata’s Composers’ Project, in addition to Italian composer Luciano Berio’s extraordinary collection of folk songs, a straight folk set performed by Bella, and a laidback late night folk session to finish the evening.

Will Lang, best known for his percussion in folk-fusion group Park Bench Social Club and Mabon has recruited some of the finest musicians from the Folk and Hip-Hop worlds, both from the UK and Australia, to explore and unravel histories, identities and culture. Combining these diverse talents, the band are pushing British folk to a new and incredible level.

A spectacular evening that sees two giants of the folk scene – Pentangle's John Renbourn and Incredible String Band's Robin Wiliamson – performing together.
Luminary acoustic guitarist and songwriter John Renbourn is best known for his collaborations with Bert Jansch and his time with the legendary folk/jazz fusion band Pentangle.
Scottish multi-instrumentalist, musician, singer, songwriter and master Celtic storyteller Robin Williamson made his name as a member of the Incredible String Band between 1966 and 1974.
During that time the band were one of the most popular and influential groups of the era. John and Robin will be performing both their own solo material at the concert as well as playing as a duo.
Their live album Wheel Of Fortune, released in 1995, was nominated for a Grammy (as was the Incredible String Band’s 1968 album Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter). An unmissable and intimate night in the company of two legends of the British folk scene.

Jesca Hoop was born in Southern California to strict Mormon parents. She grew up singing traditional folk tunes in four-part harmony, but soon broke away from this background, becoming a homesteader and working with children. As a nanny for Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan’s three children, Hoop gained both musical experience and notoriety; Waits said of Jesca, 'Her music is like going swimming in a lake at night'. Following exposure through radio station KCRW, Jesca toured with Polyphonic Spree, Mark Knopfler, Andrew Bird and Elbow – with Guy Garvey also dueting with Hoop on her latest acclaimed album Hunting My Dress.

In the early to mid-1980s, she emerged from the same Greenwich Village folk scene that had spawned Bob Dylan and Joan Baez twenty years previously.

Although her work borrowed much from folk's tradition of storytelling through song, her gentle yet powerfully political acoustic pop brought singles such as "Marlene on the wall', 'Luka' and the hugely successful 'Solitude Standing' album to a global audience. In 1990, her career received an extra boost when UK-based rap duo DNA released a remix of a cappella song 'Tom's Diner', which charted world-wide.

She has inspired a whole new generation of musicians – Beth Orton and Alanis Morrisette spring to mind – and tonight is another chance to hear those beautiful songs and Suzanne's hauntingly fragile vocals. They might bear the tools of the folk musician and use odd traditional tunes as their source, but Spiro have as much affinity with the worlds of contemporary classical and dance music as they do with the folk scene. This four-piece contemporary ensemble take a meticulous approach to composition and performance, creating a sound much greater than their parts (accordion, mandolin, acoustic guitar and violin) would suggest. 

Their music is sweeping, majestic and cinematic; marking them out as kindred spirits with Steve Reich, Michael Nyman and the Penguin Cafe Orchestra.  It's a unified but never uniform sound, one made by four virtuosic musicians pulling in the same direction and keen to provoke an emotional response in anyone within earshot.

Described by The Guardian as “"the finest instrumental duo on the traditional scene"” and twice winners of the BBC Radio 2 folk award for Best Duo, John Spiers and Jon Boden have made the genre of spontaneous, punky English folk very much their own stomping ground. Loud, proud, and with just a few acoustic instruments, they create a multitude of textures upon which they present traditional stories and dance music which are as much at home on the main stage of Cambridge Folk Festival as they are in a lock-in at the local pub.

Mixing traditional folk, classical, jazz, pop and music hall, Paul Sartin (of Bellowhead and Faustus) and Paul Hutchinson (of Hoover The Dog) have together wowed audiences throughout the UK with their eclectic and eccentric mix of tunes and between songs chat that always sends audiences home with smiles on their faces.

The band will be releasing a Christmas album Frost Bites this November.
